Motional Perspective
The Fitzgerald-Lorentz Transformation Equations revisited
During the late 1800s and the early 1900s, many scientists were occupied with studying the nature of light. One quest was to discover whether or not light required a medium in order to travel. Light was thought to be similar to sound in that sound required air, water, or solid material in order to travel, so should light. The word 'ether' was used to describe the expected light transmission medium. The most noteworthy experiment in the search for the existance of ether is known as the Mickelson-Morley experiment, using an interferometer (Albert Abraham Michelson, 1852-1931, and Edward William Morey, 1838-1923). This experiment failed in its every attempt to detect the presence of the elusive ether. We have subsequently learnt that light will travel through a vacuum; hence, it appears that there was no ether to find. This important experiment, while thought to be a failure at the time, was really a success in that no ether was found.
